Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions we hear most often.
Is PapyDocs free?
Yes. The PDF tools available on this website are free to use, without a trial period.
Do I need an account?
No. You can use every tool without signing up or signing in.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
Not for local tools, which process files in your browser. Office conversions and AI features are the exceptions: they are clearly marked and only send data after you agree.
Is it safe to use PapyDocs with confidential documents?
Processing happens on your device, which avoids sending documents over the internet. As with any software, use a device and browser you trust, and keep your browser up to date.
Are there file size limits?
Yes. Because processing uses your device's memory, PDFs are limited to 100 MB each and images to 25 MB each. Very large documents may still be slow on phones.
Why did my PDF not get much smaller?
Lossless optimization cannot change how the document looks, so savings depend on how the file was created. Files with photos or scans shrink more when you allow image compression. If the result is not smaller, we tell you and you can keep your original.
Is the signature legally binding?
The Sign PDF tool creates a visual signature, not a certified digital signature. Whether it is accepted depends on the document and the rules that apply to you.
Can I use password-protected PDFs?
Yes, if you know the password: unlock the file with the Unlock PDF tool first. You can also protect your own files with a password using AES-256 encryption.
Does Papy AI read my files?
Only if you ask it to, and only after you agree. The text is extracted on your device and sent to the AI provider to answer your request. The assistant can only use the tools PapyDocs actually provides and tells you when something is not possible.
How faithful are Word, Excel and PowerPoint conversions?
They use LibreOffice on the PapyDocs conversion server. Most documents convert well, but fonts, complex layouts and macros may differ from Microsoft Office. Check the result before sharing it.
Does PapyDocs work on phones?
Yes. The website is designed for touch screens and recent mobile browsers. Very large files work best on a computer.
Which languages are available?
English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Lingala. Use the language selector at the top of the page.
